Me: you are on the list of medicaid providers posted on their website.
The four doctors officers: we don't take medicaid anymore.
Me: I have Blue Cross too.
Them: we'll take that.
I'm so glad my mom kept me on her insurance plan. This is so stupid though. With Blue Cross I have to pay a $50 copay for the visit but with Medicaid it would have been free. Here are some of the reasons why health care in North Carolina is completely messed up right now.
1. Our state representatives have privatized medicaid, which means that the state decides what doctors I can see even if I have a prior relationship with another doctor. That is some bullshit. I have a psychiatrist (who takes medicaid) in a different part of the state that I see, but since my address is in the town where I go to school the state wants me to see some doctor I've never heard of in the county. Um no.
2. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) has expanded Medicaid coverage, which should be good, but most doctors are just choosing to not take medicaid patients anymore because they get less reimbursement from the government plan than from private insurance companies. This means there is no financial incentive to take medicaid patients.
Here's the thing, I don't have $50. That's why I tried to use my other insurance. I am not trying to "cheat the system" by using medicaid. Healthcare in the U.S. is like something out of a developing country. (Not the doctors themselves, but the way we pay for it).
